A MMA fighter has been jailed after launching into an unprovoked attack outside a bar, leaving his victim with a brain haemorrhage with a single punch.

Aftab Miah, 37, left Kit Bruce, 24, with life-changing injuries with a punch which left him unconscious outside Libation bar in Hove, East Sussex.

The punch sent Mr Bruce crashing to the floor and hitting his head on the pavement after the pair clashed in another pub across the road earlier on the evening of May 21.

The row began at Pascal's Bistro Bar at around 23:00 when Miah, a hot yoga instructor and trained mixed martial artist, was seen punching the victim in the face before both men and their groups of friends were told to leave the premises. Mr Bruce and his group of friends went to another bar across the road, and Miah decided to leave the area.

But just before midnight, Mr Bruce was walking along the street when Miah jumped out of the passenger seat of a car which had pulled up alongside him and launched into an attack.

CCTV footage captured the attack before Miah got back into the vehicle and sped from the scene.

Mr Bruce fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement, leading to a fractured skull and a subsequent bleed on the brain.

According to Brighton and Hove News, Mr Bruce was sedated for two days and has been left with problems with his hearing and balance.

Miah, who states online that he became a professional MMA athlete in 2013, was arrested by Sussex Police the following day after being identified by witnesses.

Miah was jailed for 21 months at Lewes Crown Court last month after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent.

He was also ordered to pay a £190 victim surcharge.

Detective Police Constable James Botting described the incident as 'callous and unprovoked.'

'This was a callous, unprovoked attack in which Aftab Miah left his victim lying in the street with serious injuries,' he said.

'Miah has a number of previous convictions for violent crimes and this custodial sentence has taken a violent offender off our streets.

'Violence of any kind has no place in our city and we will continue working to tackle violent behaviour through enforcement and alongside our partner agencies to try to steer people away from violence.'

Pascal's Bistro Bar, where the attack happened, had it's alcohol licence revoked one month after the incident.

A council licensing panel decided to revoke the licence after hearing 'overwhelming' evidence about problems on the premises.
