Mother, 25, appears at court accused of causing the death of one-month-old after baby's father, 27, was charged with murder and GBH

A young mother appeared before magistrates on Tuesday accused of causing or allowing the death of a child. 

Chantelle Stroud, 25, was accused of involvement in the death of one-month-old baby Colby Lawton who died at an address in Newbury, Berkshire, in May last year.  

The baby's father, James Lawton, 27, has already been charged and remanded with the murder of baby Colby. 

He appeared before magistrates in Reading, Berskhire, on May 25.

Police were called to Fountain Gardens, Ashridge Court, Newbury by ambulance crews just before 2am on May 9 last year following reports a newborn was in cardiac arrest. 

The baby was taken to hospital for treatment but later died.  

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said today: 'A woman has been charged in connection with an investigation into the death of a one-month old baby which occurred last year in Newbury.

'Chantelle Stroud, aged 25 years, of Ashridge Court, Newbury, Berks., has been charged today with one count of causing or allowing the death of a child, and one count of assault, ill-treatment, neglect, or abandoning a child to cause unnecessary suffering.

'The charge is in connection with the death of one-month-old Colby Lawton, which occurred on May 9 2020 in Newbury. Stroud appeared before magistrates in Reading today .

'On May 25 this year, James Lawton, aged 27 years, of Boreham Field, Warminster, Wiltshire, was charged with one count of murder and one count of GBH with intent in relation to the incident,' the spokesman added.
