Fright night! Sydneysiders brave the rain to celebrate Halloween and some homeowners have invested in some VERY spooky decorations

Thunderstorms failed to put a stop to Halloween celebrations across Sydney, as families braved the wild weather to don their scariest costumes and hit the streets.

Homeowners also went all out to put on spooky displays as they opened their doors to the soaked trick-or-treaters, as thunderstorms and heavy rain lashed the harbour city.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Greater Sydney area on Saturday afternoon.

But the threat of giant hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall wasn't enough to steal the cheer from Halloween enthusiasts.

Sydneysiders shared snaps of their careful curated costumes and special effects makeup on social media before hitting the town.

Many opted to attend the numerous events across the city, including a special event at the iconic Luna Park theme park.

Bars and pubs opened up under the close watch of health authorities to ensure COVID-19 restrictions are enforced.

New South Wales Health issued a warning ahead of Saturday night's celebrations about celebrating safely amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Executive Director of NSW Health Protection, Dr Jeremy McAnulty, said as long as levels of community transmission remain low, NSW Health is supportive of Halloween celebrations going ahead.

'Halloween celebrations will need to be a little different this year due to COVID-19 and we are urging everyone in the community to play their part,' Dr McAnulty said.

Health authorities urged homeowners to limit guests to their front yard, and restrict numbers to no more than 20 people at one time.

They also encouraged the distribution of treats in individual packets rather than communal lolly bowls and the provision of hand santiser at front gates.
