A $22 million beachside home as dethroned Chris Hemsworth's mansion as the most expensive property in Byron Bay. 

The five-bedroom home at 35 Marine Parade has private stairs that lead down to Wategos Beach and a heated infinity pool overlooking the ocean. 

Avengers star Chris Hemsworth bought a property in Byron Bay for $7 million in 2014 and demolished it to build an $18 million mega-mansion in its place. 

Other international celebrities were eyeing up the Marine Parade property, which was on the market for just five days before it sold for $20 to $22 million.

LJ Hooker Avnu estate agent Michael Coombs sold the multi-million dollar property.

'We did have a few A-list celebrities inquire about it, and some sports stars,' Mr Coombs told The Daily Telegraph. 

'In my opinion it is the best house in Byron Bay. It was not surprising that I got a sale early.'

There are rumours that High School Musical star Zac Efron bought the property as he is currently staying in Byron Bay with his local girlfriend Vanessa Valladares. 

'I can't comment on who purchased it,' Mr Coombs said.  

The real estate agent confirmed the $20 to $22 million sales price broke the suburb sales record by beating the previous record set by 11 Marine Parade.   

Byron Bay has become a celebrity enclave amid the COVID-19 pandemic with many of Australia's wealthy residents flocking to the beachside town due to international travel bans.

The property itself has a total of five bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a mezzanine walk-in wardrobe and ensuite and four more bedrooms.  

On the lower ground floor, there is a yoga and games room, a commercial laundry and a wine cellar.
